Sept. 14 - “How to Begin”
Guest: Alexander Chee
Reading: Alexander Chee, “The Writing Life

For writers at every stage of development, this workshop will explore what it means to begin, whether in your journey toward writing as a profession, writing in a new mode or genre, or simply how to get started when you’re feeling stuck. We will discuss and work with Alexander Chee’s “The Writing Life,” an essay from his collection How to Write an Autobiographical Novel, and will be joined by Alex himself!

Sept. 21 - “Practice, In Writing and Life”
Guest: Porochista Khakpour
Reading: Lidia Yuknavitch, “I Will Always Inhabit the Water

Whether Octavia Butler’s self-hypnosis, Lidia Yuknavitch’s swimming, or Haruki Murakamai’s running, this workshop will explore practices and routines that can help writers once we sit down to write. We’ll be discussing Lidia Yuknavitch’s amazing essay “I Will Always Inhabit the Water” and I’ll be joined by author and good friend Porochista Khakpour.

Sept. 28 - “Rediscovering Your Story”
Guest: Garrard Conley
Reading: Melissa Febos, “Mind Fuck: Writing Better Sex

For this workshop, we’ll use Melissa Febos’s essay “Mind Fuck” as a starting point for thinking about personal writing not as telling a single story but uncovering many layers of stories through continued investigation, as well as exploring how one’s perspective on events changes over time. I’ll be joined in discussion by the wonderful Garrard Conley, author of the New York Times Bestselling memoir, Boy Erased.

Oct. 5 - “Drafting, Revising, Composting”
Guest: Thomas Grattan
Reading: Anne Lamott, “Shitty First Drafts” and Natalie Goldberg, “Composting

When is it time to keep going when a draft isn’t going well and when is it time to revise? Or when is it time to start something new? Through Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts” and Natalie Goldberg’s “Composting,” I’ll be discussing different philosophies around drafting, revision, and rewriting and will be joined by one of my favorite writers Thomas Grattan, author of The Recent East.
